Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego Loses ABA Accreditation Appeal

The ABA upheld a decision to strip national accreditation from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in downtown San Diego. The school will lose national accreditation effective Dec. 17th.

Like La Verne School of Law in Los Angeles, Thomas Jefferson plans to continue operating but with accreditation from the state.
Accreditation from the State Bar of California allows the school’s students to take the state bar exam, but not bar exams in other states.

Among other deficiencies, Thomas Jefferson has posted very low bar exam pass rates. Last year only 24% of first time takers passed the bar exam. The repeat takers were shockingly lower than that.

LaVerne Law School drops ABA bid; To be Only California Accredited

The University of La Verne, in Los Angeles, will keep its law school open, but as a California-accredited campus instead of an ABA accredited school.

The university voted to convert the law school from ABA accreditation to accreditation by the State Bar of California—a move that will make it easier for the Ontario, California, campus to meet program standards. But it will also mean that graduates are only eligible to take the bar exam in California.

Under the new plan, La Verne would become the first law school to drop its ABA accreditation in the wake of that body adopting tougher bar exam standards. The ABA in 2018 changed that standard, giving law schools two years instead of five years to ensure that at least 75% of their graduates pass the licensing exam.

That heightened standard was one factor that prompted the board of trustees last month to order a full-scale review of the La Verne’s law school and its sustainability. The school’s long-term finances were another catalyst for the review, officials said. About 240 students are enrolled at the school.

Graduates of ABA-accredited law schools had a 71% first-time pass rate on the July 2019 exam. That figure was 26% for graduates of California-accredited schools. The repeat bar exam taker rate was a dismal 14%. La Verne has a particularly horrible pass rate.

Many students have stated or complained that “it’s too early to start studying”. These students are sadly misinformed and are getting incorrect information. The California Blues – Nearly 50% Failed the California Bar Exam and the Repeat Takers Failed at a 75% Rate

California’s bar exam results have been released. The pass rate on California’s July 2019 bar exam was 50% and the repeat taker pass rate was only 26%.

Although California ABA first time takers was 71%, the repeat rate was just 36%. Out of state ABA repeat rate was only 29%, the CA accredited repeat taker pass rate was just 14%. The unaccredited school students were even worse – the first time takers ranged from 20-29% and the repeat takers ranged from 9% to 13%. California’s Bar Exam Results Have Been Released

California’s bar exam results have been released. The pass rate on California’s July 2019 bar exam increased to 50.1%, rebounding from a historic low of 40.7 % last year

Here is the general statistics.

California ABA: first time taker: 71%, repeat rate: 36%
Out of State ABA: first time taker: 73%; repeat rate: 29%
CA Accredited, not ABA: first time taker: 26%, repeat rate: 14%
Unaccredited, fixed facility: first time taker: 27%, repeat rate: 9%
Unaccredited, correspondence: first time taker: 20%; repeat rate: 13%
Unaccredited distance learning: first time taker: 29%, repeat rate: 12%
