Massachusetts Bar Exam Results Were Shockingly Low and Shows that Repeat Takers Need The MBE & UBE Testing Institute’s Help

Massachusetts results were released this week. The passing statistics coming out of Massachusetts were shocking and appalling.

70% of the takers were repeat takers, a record high number of repeat takers. That is an outrageous number, even for February. Only 30% of the takers were first time takers. It’s an amazing statistic to think that it’s now acceptable that most of the bar exam takers have failed the bar at least one time previously. It has become the new norm. But it doesn’t have to be tolerated.

Let’s look at some more statistics coming out of Massachusetts. The 70% repeat taker’s performance accounts for a shocking low overall pass rate of 37%. But the first time taker pass rate wasn’t much better. The first time taker pass rate was 54%. The 2nd time repeat taker pass rate was only 38%, the 3rd time taker pass rate was 31%, the 4th time taker pass rate was 21% and the 5th time plus repeat taker pass rate was 11%. California Postpones its Bar Exam to Sept 9th and Looks to Online Testing

The Supreme Court of California on Monday ordered the July California Bar Exam be postponed to Sept. 9-10, and directed the State Bar to make every effort to administer the test online with remote or electronic proctoring.

The State Bar of California should also allow those registered to withdraw with a full refund through the day before the exam, Sept. 8.

Exam results should be disclosed to takers no later than Dec. 31.

Among the other measures approved by the court:

Work with the National Conference of Bar Examiners to facilitate online administration of the multiple-choice part of the test—the 2020 Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), or some variation of it—in September.

Submit a workplan to the court no later than May 11, with planned goals and milestones for online administration of the tests.

The National Conference of Bar Examiners, which provides the Multistate Bar Examination, will formally announce its plans for administering its exams, including exam dates, on May 5. The organization has begun initial planning to offer the exam Sept. 9-10.

One of two scenarios presented to the Supreme Court by the California Bar’s Board of Trustees was the development of a provisional certification program, under which those eligible would be certified to work under the supervision of a licensed California attorney.

The court indicated that it will continue to explore that and other options as circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic develop or change.

In addition to the issues of the bar exam, California will also make changes to the First-Year Law Students’ Examination (the Baby Bar) with online administration and postponement of the test.

The New York Bar Exam Results Have Been Released; The MBE & UBE Testing Institute Can Help Repeat Takers

The New York bar exam results have been released.

The overall pass rate was 40%, down from the 45% last year. The repeat-takers pass rate was 28%, down from last year’s pass rate of 36%.

The number of repeat candidates who sat for the bar examination was 63% of all candidates who sat for the February 2020 examination.

The number of foreign-educated candidates who sat for the bar was 46% of all candidates who sat for the February Exam.

Nationwide, 2/3rds of the February Bar Exam Takers Were Repeat Bar Exam Takers – The MBE & UBE Testing Institute Specializes in Repeat Takers

According to the NCBE, of the 19,112 people taking the February exam, approximately two-thirds were repeat test-takers, meaning they’d already failed the exam previously. That means that approximately 12,550 of the takers were repeat takers.

As we know, the February administration is usually dominated by repeaters, According to the NCBE it was repeat test-takers pulling down the MBE average to 132.9, an all time low in February. “The February mean is always driven by repeat test-takers; this February, the decrease in the mean score among likely first-time takers was relatively small, while the decrease was larger for likely repeaters,” so says the NCBE.

States are still releasing results but from what we have seen, the overall pass rate has been way down, as well as the repeat taker pass rate. In Alabama, the repeat taker pass rate was 14%, and the overall pass rate was 26%; in Virginia, the overall pass rate was 58%; in Colorado, the overall pass rate was only 56%; in South Carolina, the overall pass rate was 55%.
